EOSE (European Observatoire of Sport and Employment) was set up in 1994 as part of the European Network of Sport Sciences in Higher Education (ENSSHE) later renamed ENSSEE, the European Network for Sport Science Education and Employment.

The scope of EOSE is understood to cover the whole Sport and Active Leisure sector including the Outdoor and Fitness. EOSE acts at the European and international level with the goal to serve as a source of knowledge and a strategic facilitator to support the development of Sport and Active Leisure including employment, sports systems, developing standards, competence, qualifications and Vocational Education and Training (VET).

In 2002, EOSE became independent and registered in France as a not for profit association. Its secretariat is since based in Lyon.

As part of its growth and to better answer the challenges faced by the sector, EOSE opened in June 2012 a branch (EOSE Services, a non for profit company) in London which is a sister organisation working under an MoU.
